A Brief Introduction to RCNS

In contrast to typical preschools or day care, co-ops allow the parent to participate in the child’s learning environment. Parents are rewarded when what they learn in the classroom extends to their homes, families, and friends.

At RCNS, parents and guardians are responsible for fulfilling all the functions necessary for running the classroom, with the guidance and instruction of the Academic Director. Co-op members elect a governing Board of Directors that assumes various oversight duties, which are outlined in the school’s By-Laws. Parents assist the Director in class by performing various tasks which include, but are not limited to, monitoring a portion of the classroom, distributing snacks and cleaning the school.

Being a preschool co-op member means giving an extra bit of time and, in return, creating an enriched learning environment for your child. Co-op nursery schools are among the most successful, long-lived cooperative endeavors in the U.S. They work because members care deeply about their children’s preschool experience.

Goals

There are several desired outcomes from the program:

  • To help the children discover their ability to resolve conflict with words and not physical contact
  • To build self-esteem through loving words and gestures
  • To give the children the self confidence they need to solve problems on their own
  • To create a caring, loving environment that will allow the children to develop to their fullest
  • To build upon what children already know and are able to do (activating prior knowledge), to consolidate their learning and to foster their acquisition of new concepts and skills
  • To create meaningful play experiences that will allow the children to experiment and build on their cognitive development
  • To allow the children space and time to strengthen themselves physically
  • To educate parents on raising children during workday interactions and to provide support to parents in the spirit of a true cooperative
  • To develop the whole child, keeping in mind that all children develop at different rates
